Food Review: BINGKI

BINGKI
Blk 7 Tanjong Pagar Plaza #01-106
Singapore 081007

Opening hours:
Sunday - Thursday 11 am to 2 am
Friday and Saturday 11 am to 4 am

BINGKI !
I was initially skeptical about the whole bingsu craze, because it just seemed like overrated ice kachang.
More so after I tried places like O'ma spoon, and Nunsongyee - which was the worst, in my opinion.
All of them tasted like I expected - shaved ice with toppings on top.
That being said, at least O'ma Spoon's shaved ice had a slight hint of milky flavour,
unlike NSY, which you needed to pour the milk yourself, and so ended up unevenly distributed.

On a random whim after our Tori King Ramen Keisuke, we decided to give BINGKI a try.
This Bimb was already on a bingsu spree,
cause she was eating at 313's Ice Lab only the day AND 2 days before! hahahah.

Menu!

Ordered 2 types to try - Mango and Watermelon - $15 each
Bimb was actually hesitant to order the mango in case it was sour,
so she dee siao the korean waiter and asked him if the mango was sweet or not.
Poor guy obviously didn't understand such chim sentences, HAHAH so he was like ????

His colleague had to step in to save him LOLOL.

And later on when he delivered the bingsu to our table, he commented "Mango sweet, very sweet!"
BWAHAHAHA no it turned out sour #laughdieme

Bimb: "Is this supposed to be Pooh Bear?"
HAHAHAH I hope not omg #差太远了

Looks more like Boss instead.

Watermelon is my favourite!

Both flavours had super fine shavings of milky ice, which was not too sweet and cloying.
I've never had bingsu in Korea, but this is definitely another level from what I've tried so far.
And I love how the fruits are fresh and juicy!
Well, the sour mango wasn't actually that bad, just not totally ripey sweet if you get what I mean :B

Yay first bingsu try with #bimbgluttonboss #pluspok !

Second time was with Manlin, and we ordered the Green Tea - $15
Same with the previous time; fine shavings of light green tea milk ice.
No improvement with the art deco hahahaha.

Third time - after dinner with these crazies!
Friday nights are super crowded and this time we had to queue around 20 min.

LOL at that time Pokemon Go was still quite popular,
so me pok and bowei actually went roaming to catch a Jynx and Onix HAHAH.

Make a I'm-seriously-writing-for-bingsu face !
Omg bowei HAHAH.

Resting bitch face on hahahahah
Bimb's like YOU WANNA FIGHT?!

Janchi Bingsu - $22
Mountain of shaved milky ice, topped with almonds, blueberries, grapes, mango, rockmelon and watermelon.
This was ginormous!
Enough for 7 of us to share comfortably so it was pretty value for money :D
And it's Instagram worthy too hahahaha.

Definitely would recommend this for larger groups.

As a gauge this bowl can fit my #buddingyeast's face, so yup it's big *bwahahah ;p*

BINGKI is definitely my to-go place for bingsu!

However, I've also come across some recent reviews on their fb,
who are complaining about the service and quality of the food.

Hopefully BINGKI will be able resolve their issues,
because they definitely have the potential to go far in Singapore's competitive cafe industry.

Food Review: Pokemon Cafe

Better share this before its over! :x

Pokémon Cafe - in collaboration with EwF - is at Bugis Junction from 27th May to 31st July.
Ahh, brings back the memories of us glued to our Game Boys trying to win all the gyms in the Kanto region.
I actually got as far as the Elite Four but died at Lance's hand :x
The game is so different now, with all the running shoes and whatnot.

Selfie with #buddingyeast! :D
Anyway, we went on a Friday, and the queue wasn't too bad. Around 1.5 hour?
Not as bad as the 5 hour wait on opening day hahah.

Menu was presented to us - order first while waiting for your table.
Eh but honestly saying, that didn't cut down waiting time by much.
We still had to wait around 20 mins for the food after getting seated.

4 mains, 4 desserts, 4 drinks. 1 takeaway item.
Only 2 mains were available at the time, meh.

Bwahahah Bimb's Pika-Bf.
The only 'live' Pikachu we saw - meh, no mascot.

EwF's service staff do it right - they are friendly, and they know the menu well when questioned.
I'm quite ley chey - can't eat beef or mutton, so I had to know what's in the sauce.
The waiter answered me quite patiently.

Ahh so cute the Pikachu couple as waiter and waitress!
Fun fact: Female Pikachus' tail end in a heart shape. <3 p="">

No food yet so cute placemat first!

This two guys bring it to a whole new level on Instagram-worthy.

Dining buddies!

Special Move "Fire Blast"! Primal Groudon's Bolognese - $20
The Pokéball is a fried egg, slathered with tomato sauce and detailed with seaweed.
It's sitting atop beef bolognese, with two slices of bread.

Quite a weird dish, I mean, was it meant to be a deconstructed hamburger..?
Pok didn't know where to start, hahaha.

Pikachu Smiling Rice Omelette with Magma Sauce - $25
I think the rice is alright - plain old saffron rice, but omg tomato sauce does NOT go well with it.
The Magma sauce is some coconut milk thingy, sorta like laksa without the spice.
Most disappointing of all is the egg i guess. It is your nasi lemak kind of egg.

Bimb was telling me not to think like that, if not we would have paid $25 for a plate of nasi lemak. :x

But REALLY. Pikachu looks like it got hit by a water gun rather than smiling :/

Pikachu's Sweeeeet Pancake - $20
This was actually yummy. Pancake is chewy, and the tail is made of biscuit.

And we arrived at a conclusion.

Have your dinner somewhere else and only have the desserts here. Hahaha.

Yes yes, we know not to expect much from a themed cafe, we can still have a shred of hope.
There is actually a lot of potential dishes for a Pokemon theme - I mean, just look at Japan's.
And coming from EwF, which makes really yummy food.. This was really sad.

I don't want to say anything else about the photobooth and the staff's photography skills either. Hahaha.

Food Review: DC Comics Super Heroes Cafe

Other than Batman, I am never a huge fan of DC Comics.
But the boyfriend is. HAHAH.

Imagine his excitement when he found out our dinner venue :D

DC Comics Super Heroes Café

2 Bayfront Avenue, L1-03/4/5 Bay Level
The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands

Opening hours:
Sun - Thurs: 10.30 am to 11 pm
Fri - Sat: 10.30 am to 11.30 pm

*Checked with the staff - they're not halal, but no pork no lard is used

The dining area is split into two - cafe on the right, and restaurant on the left.
Cafe serves well, cafe food - slices of cake, cupcakes, sandwiches, drinks etc.

Decor is really awesome, I spotted this private room at the cafe area.
Gotham City Police Dept. - complete with Joker, Harley Quinn, Catwoman and Riddler sketches.

Oh hai Selena Kyle/Anne Hathway. And her sexy bike.

Memorabilia!

Restaurant area.

Menu!
Names of the dishes are creative, in that cheesy and cute way.

This is on the back

Crazy person kept staring at the wrong side of the menu.. Faster order la!

Table placard.
I've never heard of this guy, sorry hahahaha.

The Penguin's Squid Squad - $14.90
Otherwise known as calamari. Served with yuzu tartar dip.

We got this to share, and eh its quite nice!
Lightly battered and served piping hot, the calamari wasn't greasy at all.
The yuzu tartar complemented it very nicely too.

Pok's Batman's Dark Knight - $25.90
Wagyu beef patty, grilled portobello, mesclun salad, tomatoes, melted cheddar cheese and tapenade spread,
kiaped between a charcoal bun stamped with Batman's logo in cheddar cheese.

Pok loves it but I think he might be biased cause its Batman..

I went to google what's tapenade spread, and it is.. seasoned olives!

You know, for the rest of the dishes I wasn't at all impressed with the presentation.
Actually, only Pok's was like, wow DC-inspired leh!

Because the rest of our food looked like they are the calefare in the comic books.. Extras only.

Bimb's: Hawkman's Chicken Schnitzel Fingers - $18.90
Breaded chicken fingers with fries, mesclun salad and drizzled with cheese.

I can't even see the chicken HAHAHAH.
Fortunately the taste was alright, but it was slightly oily at the end, especially the fries.

Mine: Aquaman's Friends with Fish.. and Chips - $22.90
Traditional battered snapper and fries.

At least they got the arrangement sequence right this time. ;p

Their chef must be super at preparing seafood, (yes I needed to make that punny joke)
cause my fish and chips was also battered to perfection and complemented with the yuzu tartar.
Addictive leh.

Boss: Suicide Squawk - $22.90
Roasted half spring chicken, marinated with honey, thyme and lemon.
Served with grilled pineapple, roasted sesame seeds, spring onion and fries.

HAHAH the name really ah, quite apt.

For a themed cafe/restaurant, presentation is usually of utmost importance, followed by ambiance and food expectations.

I guess for DC cafe, at least they made sure of the ambiance and food quality standards,
rather than only serving pretty but sub-standard tasting food.

I've been to enough themed cafes to know that I shouldn't expect great dishes,
but I'm happy to report that DC cafe scores a 7/10 for food quality.

That being said, they really should put in slightly more effort into the presentation of their dishes.
Plopping everything onto decal plates doesn't make it exciting enough for a customer who is already hyped up by the ambiance.
The least they could do is stick some food flags la, like those Fish & Co. uses.
Not very difficult ah, and the cheesy names are already there.

My dinner companions!

#MarvelFTW !! Boss says he's Ironman HAHAH.
