Food Review: Monster Curry

Roaming around Ion and we didn't have any idea where to nom dinner.
Bimb suggested Monster Curry, so okay! Since we haven't tried it before.

Rice is always an okay.
Actually usually everything is an okay to this glutton.

Outlets at Tampines One, Parkway Parade, Ion, Jurong Point, Nex, Vivo City and Somerset 313

Here's their menu!

According to their website:

"Monster Curry’s sauce contains up to 14 different spices and vegetables,
and requires up to two days to cook so as to bring out the “Umami” to its fullest.

Bravely calling it gourmet curry for the man-hours and skill required,
the sauce is cooked closed to boiling point for six hours at each time on an open fire for a total of two days.
It is then let to rest for another day for the acidity of the sauce to evaporate,
so as to produce a curry sauce that is smooth, balanced and full-bodied.

The end result is an unusual combination of bitter and salty tastes,
and when paired with generous succulent cuts of golden-fried pork, chicken or beef,
makes it almost addictive, as it is scrumptious.

Monster Curry is the only Japanese restaurant in Singapore to serve a “demi-glace” curry sauce, marked by a rich and deeply flavourful brown sauce."

So, painstakingly prepared japanese curry for budget-friendly price, bring it on.

Taadaa our orders!
The plates are huge, but honestly the serving is normal sized.

See the squiggles of hot sauce on the curry?
You get to choose the flame levels of the curry, so 1 squiggle is 1 level I guess.

Cheese Chicken Katsu Curry - $14
Guess who has to eat the chicken katsu. Hahahaha

They serve pretty decent katsu - not too densely battered, juicy and not dry at all.
However, the shredded cheese is simply scattered on the hot katsu,
and not like a melted cheese sauce as seen on the menu photo.

Pork Shabu - Shabu Omelet Curry - $14
Bimb's.

Cheese Omelet Curry - $12
Mine!

At least this was legit melted cheese.
Omelet is not as fluffy as I would have liked; actually it's almost like Bimb's omelet above,
just with loads of mozzarella dumped on top.

The curry sauce itself was spicy and rich - I chose 1 flame for my first try.
Usually for first tries I wanna get as original taste as I can get.
Can't tell if it has been really cooked for as long as they say, but definitely not your instant jap curry paste taste.

For its taste and serving size, Monster Curry is definitely worth its price.
Guess we found another dining budget option at the Orchard area. :D

Food Review: Standing Sushi Bar

First date of the year - me and Pok were craving for Japanese food, so yay time to visit Standing Sushi Bar!
Ever since reading about their special promotions, I've been wanting to go.
Ehhhh 5 slices of salmon sashimi for only $3, why not!
Eat until siao also can omg slurps.

Itatakimasu~!

We had some self control and only ordered 5 sets of salmon sashimi. Only 5 ;p
I love that their salmon slices are not too thick or too thin, just right that it melts in your mouth.
Recently went to a buffet place where one serving of my salmon was cut wrongly - felt so stiff and frozen :x

All Salmon All the Time - $16.90
One of their specialty maki rolls.
It has avocado, raw salmon and cucumber within, topped with torched aburi salmon and ebiko.
Love the texture of the crunchy, smooth, and torched flavour combined together. :D

Reminds me of The Sushi Bar's aburi roll, om nom nom.
Except that this one has slightly thicker slices, making it hard for even my big mouth to chew.

Yakiniku Don - $20
Thinly sliced beef yakiniku, onions and toasted sesame on a bed of mixed grain rice, topped with an onsen egg.
Obviously I didn't try this one but pok says it was alright.

Alright means gg he wont order this anymore liao HAHAH.
Guess it didn't impress him enough

Teriyaki Chicken Don - $16
*Extra Onsen Egg - Add $1.50
Served together with a side of thinly sliced cabbage salad with sesame sauce - the kind Bimb loves to spam hahahaha.

Chicken was niceeee, well marinated too.
But the mixed grain rice however, was sticky and not very hot.. so meh.

After finishing all the above I decided I needed another serving of salmon sashimi so I did.
Wahahahah like a free flow only!

Went for a stroll around the Marina Bay Promontory - its quite shiok at night, when the cool wind blows.
And you just finished an awesome meal, sit down by the riverfront,
then suddenly you fall into the Singapore River cause you fell asleep. HAHAH

Okay no la we didn't fall in, just sat there and talked.
Sometimes its still quite surreal and awesome that my first bf is someone who knows me so well, and even after so long its like we're still in our honeymoon period.

Heng I never quit Maplestory LOLOL.

Food Review: The Sushi Bar

Introducing my favourite Japanese restaurant!

I've been to The Sushi Bar for about 5 times, and each time the quality never disappoints.
Eh the price has been rising, but I think it's still reasonable for the freshness of the ingredients and the om nom nom.

The Sushi Bar
14 Scotts Road, Far East Plaza, #04-28
Singapore 228213

Opening Hours:
Mon - Thu: 12.30 pm - 3 pm
                5.30 pm - 9 pm
Fri - Sat:    12:30 pm - 9 pm

Reservations accepted until 19.30 from Monday to Friday,
No reservations on Saturday and PH.
Please SMS 96536464 for reservation.

Menu !

For starters:

Chawanmushi - $5.60
I'm quite nitpicky with my chawanmushi, but this is a pass!
Smooth and no strong eggy taste. Its not too firm either, with just enough soup.

I dont like the tobiko roe though, because it spoils the texture.

Scallop Mentaiyaki - $13.90
I dont usually love scallops (or seafood of any kind actually), but this is an exception.

Scallops are thinly sliced and drizzled with light seasoning.
Addition of mentaiko sauce and slight torching.. Nommmms.

Salmon Aburi Roll - $14.90
Another favourite of mine!
Basically anything with mentaiko sauce is bound to be my favourite LOL.

Inside the roll is cucumber and crab meat mayonnaise,
and wrapping them are slices of fresh salmon, topped with mentaiko sauce and ikura roe.
Torched.

NOMS.

This is the basic roll, and there are soft shell crab/ebi fry versions.
The ebi fry version is quite nice too, because it provides a crunchy texture coupled with the smooth salmon.

Mains:

Basic Chirashi Don - $19.90
Pok's favourite!
There is salmon, tuna, hamachi (yellowtail), and ikura roe.

Did you know that chirashi don is actually a dish created to reduce wastage?
Chefs choose and slice premium cuts of sashimi, and the leftover chunks are used.

I can promise that this does not taste like leftovers, because they still taste super fresh!

There are normal and premium versions available too, which are sliced up nicely like usual sashimi.
Eh I've noticed that on weekends the basic don isn't available.. wonder why?

Wafu Spaghetti - $10.90
In other words, Mentaiko Spaghetti. HAHAH.
Their angel hair pasta is cooked al dente, and the creamy sauce coats every strand.
The tobiko roe isnt too fishy either.
My favourite!

Based on serving size, this dish alone isn't enough but it's impossible that you only order one dish here ;p

Tofu Cheesecake - $4.90
Very light and smooth, plus the crumbly digestive biscuit base.
Om nom nom.

If I had to pick 3 items (to save my wallet),
I'd pick the Scallop Mentaiyaki, Salmon Aburi and Wafu Spaghetti. :D

Highly recommended for those who love good quality Japanese food with a budget.

Food Review: Maki-San

Found this interesting place from the list: 17 Most Delicious Restaurants under $15 in Singapore !
Previously visited Saizeriya due to this list too,
and I was hoping that Maki-san wouldnt be a similar disappointment.

Well, it definitely wasn't! :D

What's Maki-san about?
It's offers you a chance to customise your own sushi or salad!
They're all about the personalisation; if you have a chance, just visit their uber cute website.
This is a screenshot from a video I made there, cute right !

Interior of the place.
I love the vibrant primary colors they used to decorate the place.

First, fill in the order form!
There are a range of fillings available, and it's quite straightforward.
You can view it the online version here.

Le bf thinking hard in progress.

Standard combinations are also available if you cant decide or dont want to think too much. ;p

Looking at the preparation area, it feels like a Japanese version of Subway, doesnt it?
The sushi roll is popped into a machine to slice it evenly.
I'll admit that I was very wowed by it, LOL.

Taa-daa!
The sushi is packed into these super cute individual boxes.
I admit, I brought one home cause it was too cute. :B

Share your #Makisan ! :D

Nah, give you all a zoomed in look at my customised sushi!

I picked Little San - $7.90, which gives me the choice of 3 essentials, 1 sprinkle, and 1 house sauce.
For essentials, I chose sliced cheddar cheese (no surprise!), roasted mushrooms, and ebiko.
My sprinkle was tempura crunch, and smoky cheddar cheese sauce to finish. :D

#omnomnom !

I like the idea of being able to choose what goes into your sushi, and honestly, the variety of ingredients will spoil you.
Maki-san is making an effort to promote healthy eating, as seen from the option to choose healthy versions, and the wide choices of vegetables they offer.
A single maki may not be filling, at least for my stomach size, but it is value for money due to the freshness of the ingredients.

seriously, even the map is so adorable !

Maki-San
The Cathay, #B1-17/18
2 Handy Road, Singapore 229233

Opening hours:
Daily 11.30 am to 9.30 pm

Explored Orchard Gateway after dinner !
And woah, its an awesome place to snap the sunset.

Food Review: Ramen Keisuke Tori King

100 Tras St ( AM 100 Building)
Singapore 079027
Nearest MRT: Tanjong Pagar, just 10 mins away

Ramen Keisuke has been long known for its yummy and affordable ramen.
Its first store is actually their signature Tonkatsu King, where their soup base is based on pork bones
For Tori King, the soup base is solely from chicken.
That's why I managed to convince le boyfriend to give it a try.
At least he can finally know how 'authentic' ramen tastes like. :D

store exterior.

inside!
i love how the whole store gives the very Japanese vibe ^.^

the order slip

Ordering is quite straightforward here.
There are 3 types of flavours available; Original, Black Spicy (Pepper), Green Spicy (Wasabi)
And from there, pick the kind of toppings for the ramen.
Each would come with a marinated chicken thigh + the ingredient selected.
All toppings would include seaweed, flavoured egg (!) and a slice of chashu pork.

I like the flexibility where they customise each bowl to customers' preference.
Flavour, the amount of oil, and the noodle texture.

During my first visit, I chose Normal for the oil level, and it was um, too oily.
Because combined with the richness of the soup, it was slightly too cloying and I got sick of it.
So for the second visit, I chose Less oil, which was much better!

free flow beansprouts and hard boiled eggs!

proud of my nicely peeled egg. heheh.

went with pok's friends.
look at le bf pouting cause his egg didnt turn out smooth. hahah.

my gigantic bowl of all toppings ramen!

Next time I return, I'm gonna order just the flavored egg. My ultimate fav topping ^.^
MELTY EGG YOLK OMNOMNOM.
The chicken thigh is awesome too! Its really tender and full of flavour.

The chashu slice just keeps disappointing me, being really nothing more than just a slice of pork.
Last time I went, it was even slightly uncooked :/
Maybe because I've grown to love the melt in your mouth texture of Ramen Play's.
Their Charsiu Tonkotsu Ramen (D4!!) still is the best :D

My verdict? I'll definitely come back!
Even if I dont, pok is definitely dragging me back here, no doubt.
I mean, just look at his satisfied face.

Can be spokesperson already.
