Taiwan Travelogue: Day Eight - Jiufen & Shifen

Travelling out of the city to visit Jiufen 九份 and Shifen 十分 today!

We decided to squeeze both places together; not impossible but have to plan timing carefully!

Head to Zhongxiao Fuxing 忠孝復興 Station to take the long bus ride to Jiufen.
Go out via Exit 1 and make a U-turn upon exiting.
You should have SOGO mall on the right, and the railway line in front; walk straight down.
Turn left into the first lane you see, and there should be a bus stop with Service No. 1062, towards Jin Gua Shi 金瓜石
It's in front of a mala hotpot place.

The ride takes 1 hour, and costs NT90.
Again, expect private car drivers to lure you into hiring them.
This one tried to trick me by saying that the bus ride will be 2 hours.
Mehhh Manager Ng does her research one okay!

Also, please have motion sickness pills on standby, because its a winding road up.
AND IT'S COLD. Wahhhh I was jumping up and down cause I didn't bring my cardigan :x

Went into Family Mart to grab our breakfast :D
Family Mart build until so chio, the inside was like a lodge like that. Wahahah

Do not underestimate this simple looking microwave meal, because it was so good !
The tonkatsu is still v crispy, and omg the cheeeeeese. NOM.

Day Eight selfie! #yeswemust

The bus drivers know that Jiufen is one of the popular stops, so they will announce when they've reached.
Some drivers may stop at a pagoda - 瑞芳區基山觀海亭 - which you can look out for.

Jiufen is the inspiration for the town in Spirited Away - one of my favourite movies, and Bimb's too heheh.
But I honestly gotta say, it doesn't give me much of that vibe, hahaha.

If you have time, try visiting the teahouses at Shuqi Street 豎崎路, perpendicular to 九份老街.
That's another spot of inspiration for Spirited Away

The streets are narrow and winding, and even on a weekday it was quite packed.
Us going during rainy season didn't help :x

There are many stores selling handmade items, such as calligraphy brushes, and unique keychains.

Malt candy but more impressive. Hehehe.

Wah seh got drip coffee some more.

And of course, foooood.

I totally recommend the Peanut Ice Cream Popiah 阿珠雪在燒 !
The chinese name is literally 'snow's burning'. Wahaha idk where's the link but its unique.

There's crushed peanuts and chinese parsley on a thin popiah skin,
then topped with two scoops of peanut ice cream.

Shared with Levon because my weak teeth cmi. Hahaha.

Sorry I asked her to smile but she too busy with the neighbouring stall's dorayaki.

Also, must must try these Cheese Milk Sticks 起司牛奶棒 !
Looks like a Danish stick pastry, smells divine - sweet and slightly salty.
Seriously, how can something so damn simple turn out so nice !!

Other than the above, there's more savoury and traditional items available, like
九份張記傳統魚丸 Fish Balls, or 賴阿婆芋圓 Grandma Lai’s Taro balls.

Sorry I don't like balls much, so no photo. HAHAH.

In love with this fortune cat store!!
Actually its almost similar to the one I visited on Lantau Island with Levon.

Manekineko ~

The view from top.
Can't imagine living somewhere so far from the city.

Love Taiwan's famous Sun Biscuits 奶油太陽餅 ?

The famous Li Yi Biscuit 李儀餅店 has their main store there.
It is located opposite the 7-11 at the entrance of 九份老街

Li Yi Biscuit/ Le Cakes
李儀餅店
No. 18, Qiche Rd, Ruifang District
瑞芳鎮 九份 汽車路18號

Opening hours:
Monday to Friday: 9 am to 6.30 pm
Saturday to Sunday: 9 am to 8 pm

Best to buy them after you've finished exploring the area,
because they don't offer delivery to city area, and the street space is v small.

There is another branch at Taipei Main Station as well,
but Bimb has personal experience that the ones sold at the main store is nicer.

All the hard work carrying it, omg heng it's worth it hiak hiak.

You know.. in the middle of  writing this 10 days travelogue,
I realised its really really almost all about food.
*cue Bimb rolling her eyes* LOLOLOL #happyglutton.

From 李儀餅店, walk up the slope to the bus stop.
Take Bus 1061 or 1062 which goes down to Ruifang 瑞芳 station.
Journey takes around 15 - 20 mins.

You can see the first bus stop we alighted at.

Take a TRA train to Shifen 十分, via the  Ping Xi 平溪 Line.
It is a 30 minute trip, and there is only 1 train per hour, leaving 5 minutes from the top of the hour.
1.05 pm, 2.05 pm, like that.

Timing must be damn zhun, and we almost nearly missed the train. Chiong like siao omgggg.

I'm more impressed by Shifen than Jiufen - HAHAHAH BECAUSE SHI FEN 十分 = FULL MARKS GEDDIT?!
Ahem, I mean, they managed to build a town around the train tracks,
and I enjoyed the scenery more than the food they have.

Attempted a I'm just walking casually along a train track ootd, but all I got was my tak glam butt.
How do models do it omg.

Bimb is the normal one here. HAHA.

Sent out this postcard to Dad (:

We visited the Shifen Waterfall Park 十分大瀑布 first, because their last entry is at 4.30 pm.
Wanted to walk there, but I wasn't sure of the way, and with all the boxes of biscuits,
I thought it'll be safer to cab there then walk back.

Thank goodness we did, because walking back was down a slope.. hiak hiak.

Shifen Waterfall Park
十分大瀑布
No.11, Gankeng, Pingxi District
新北市 平溪區 乾坑10號

Opening Hours:
9 am to 5 pm, last entry at 4.30 pm

Some blogs list an entry fee of NT80 per person, but no one collected money from us leh.

To reach the gigantic and super gorgeous waterfall, you have to follow a trail,
which involves a fair number of steps. And a suspension bridge! Poor Levon hahahahaha.

It can get slightly slippery, so try to get ready by wearing sensible shoes and not heels.
I kid you not, I saw some people wearing heeled boots wtfffff?

Bimb panicked when she saw a sign warning us of poisonous snakes and killer wasps.
"I don't want to die here!"

At this point we were already deep inside the park so it's too late for her to panic actually ;p

Super gorgeous waterfall !
Damn therapeutic to hear the powerful waters rushing and running down the rocks.
Uh the spray and mist is no joke either.

Soooo hard to selfie with the waterfall rawr.

Here's an accidental artistic shot of Bimb - so much feels,
until the crazy woman went to caption it with smth deep. HAHAHA

And omggg laugh die me - Levon told us of a friend who rented a scooter to ride up to the park,
and ended up flying into a clump of grass.
Every patch of grass seemed comical to me after that.

And there's alot of grass lining the road HAHAH.
#weirdsenseofhumor #sorrynotsorry

Walked another suspension bridge back at Shifen Old Street 十分老街, with an equally nice view.
Seriously Levon had to face her fears too many times wahahah.

Yup I still have food to recommend.
Taadaa - Stuffed Chicken Wings !

Fried rice - with eggs and spring onions - are stuffed into a chicken wing and grilled till its crispy outside and juicy inside. NOMMMM

This custard filled bear cake was recommended by a few.
I recommend you NO.

Super bland, and the custard - no matter original or chocolate - tasted super diluted.

Time to set some sky lanterns ! That's what 十分老街 is famous for.
Did you know that sky lanterns were originally used as a signalling system?
A sky lantern 天燈 is approximately NT100 - 150, and different colors represent different type of wishes.

Wanted to wait till sunset to release the sky lantern,
but we decided to push forward to allow us more time to travel back to Taipei.

If not cannot visit.. Daiso wtf HAHAH.

Huat ah !

Damn gg we fell asleep like tak glam-ly in the train, then upon waking up Bimb was like:
"Lai let's take selfies"

My bff has a weird way of waking herself up. HAHAH

But eh it worked!
